What we Learned from our Successful Kickstarter Campaign

Kickstarter Woes from a First-Time Project Creator 

We've been waiting a while for this post - a blog about the Kickstarter process after completing a full campaign. Now that we're close to the finish line we want to outline some of the things we learned while making Cul-De-Sac Conquest.

 

Creating a board game company has been one of the hardest things we've ever done. Formulating a Kickstarter campaign should never be done lightly. It is an incredibly time consuming, and difficult endeavor. Though, it is one of the most rewarding things we've had the pleasure of being a part of.

If you're planning on creating a campaign here are some of the tips we've learned through going through a Kickstarter start to finish.

 

  • Account for Delays

Delays are almost inevitable in Kickstarter campaigns. Always account for errors in your campaign. Time is likely not to
be your friend.

Though, never sacrifice the quality of the product in order to deliver quicker. Deadlines are great, but not if you let them consume you. Don't produce a subpar product in order to meet some arbitrary date.

 

 

 

  • Expect the unexpected 

We've had to deal with quite the conundrums while producing Cul-De-Sac, most of which we could have never truly accounted for.

One of the worst was when Hanjin (the 7th largest shipping company in the world by capacity) went bankrupt and all of our inventory was stuck at sea.

In business unexpected things will happen. You'll just have to make the most of it. Take a deep breath and remember why you started the company. You'll get through it. Stay positive, and create a plan of attack.

 

  • Always budget more than expected (shipping is expensive)

When we made the budget for Cul-De-Sac we didn't realize how much shipping prices would change as weight was added for our stretch goals. Therefore, we have a major suggestion: set stretch goals well before the campaign begins and account for all of their costs.

Shipping is expensive. Make sure you know these costs like the back of your hand. Also, realize that if your entire company's budget is to be included into the Kickstarter costs that delays will mean that you will burn more cash than anticipated.

 

 

  • Keep your audience engaged

Even when you have delays, unexpected errors and cash flow issues let your backers know. Backers hate nothing more than to not be kept in the loop. You need to make sure that your backers feel comfortable that you're doing everything in your power to get your product to them.

For Cul-De-Sac Conquest we added a stretch goal to send stickers and thank you cards to all of our backers above $20. This significantly added to our costs, but made backers believe in us even when our campaign ran into several lengthy delays.

We also updated the campaign constantly. We started our campaign October 15th, 2015 and it is now October 23rd, 2016 in the past year or so we have updated the campaign 50 times. Though not all of these were lengthy updates, we made sure to constantly maintain communication.

Your backers are spending their hard earned money to buy your products. They are supporting your dream of making your project a reality. Let them know how much that means to you.

 

  • GIFs are great
